Public Works and Transportation - Dallas Bike Plan

The Dallas Bike Plan Map represents the most comprehensive Bicycle Plan in the state of Texas: 365 center-line miles signed and 150 miles not yet signed, as well as relevant bike trails and paths. This route system was designed by Dallas area cyclists working in conjunction with the City of Dallas Department of Transportation, and is intended both as a bicycle commuter tool for vehicular cyclists, as well as a guide for recreational cyclists. It is premised on the legal definition that a bicycle is a vehicle, with all the rights and responsibilities of other vehicles, and the traffic engineering observation that bicyclists fare best when they act, and are treated as, the drivers of other vehicles. This approach has been proven to be the most effective way to integrate bicycles into a viable transportation system.

The Dallas Bike Route System is a numbered grid of East/West and North/South routes, shown on the map in differing colors. This grid system places almost everyone in Dallas, no matter where they live or work, within a half-mile of a designated bike route. The East/West routes are three digit numbers, starting with Bike Route 1OO in the southern part of the city and ending with Bike Route 370 in the north. The North/South routes are one and two digit numbers, starting with Bike Route 1 in the west, running through Bike Route 99 in the east. For the most part, the streets utilized are lower volume, local streets that parallel major thoroughfares. When thoroughfares have to be used on occasion out of necessity, they are scheduled to reconstructed with wide outside lanes when the roads are rebuilt in the future. Several miles already have been, and more are being rebuilt with every bond package.

The Dallas Bike Route Signs are 14X24", white on blue with a bicycle symbol or the older “Pegasus on Wheels” logo. They have a route number, a directional arrow, and N, E, S, or W following the number to indicate the ultimate direction that you are traveling. The signs are placed on the right side of the street, sometimes freestanding although usually in conjunction with other signage. They are located intermittently along the routes, but are always present where the route changes direction.

The City of Dallas leads the State of Texas in its commitment to cycling facilities, with over 1,000 lane miles of Bike Routes and Class1 trails. Dallas has a serious commitment to integrating bicycles as part of a multi-modal transportation system without relegating them to “toy vehicle” status.

If you have questions regarding the Dallas Bike Plan, or if you wish to report a missing or damaged sign, call the Dallas Bicycle Coordinator at 214-670-4039. When you encounter maintenance problems on the system, please call 311 and tell the exact location and nature of the problem.
