Functions and Services
Major services provided by the Department of Street Services include the following:
- Street and alley pot hole repair,
- Larger scale street and alley repair,
- Limited street sweeping,
- Storm sewer cleaning and repair,
- Cleaning and repair of city owned creeks and channels,
- Operation and maintenance of the Trinity River Flood Control System,
- Cleaning and mowing of rights-of-way, medians, street islands and surplus lots,
- Response to severe storms and other weather related emergencies, natural disasters, transportation accidents, fires and hazardous spills,
- Setup and cleanup for parades, exhibitions, festivals, and other special events, and
- Annual street and alley condition inventories

Median Mowing:
The Department of Street Services is responsible for the mowing of all medians and triangles outside of the Central Business District. For visibility obstructions and other hazards to public streets, contact the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits.
Mowing of Other City Property:
Surplus City of Dallas property, tax foreclosures and unimproved street easements are mowed during the mowing season, April through October. Floodway Management Areas are mowed twice per season where necessary and are left primarily in a natural state. For all mowing concerns involving city owned property, call the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 if dialing from outside the city limits.
Creeks:
The maintenance of creeks, drainage ways, channels, and streams is the responsibility of the property owner. Except for creeks in parks, Street Services maintains creeks and drainage ways owned by the City of Dallas. For assistance with concerns about creeks, contact the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits.
Once contacted, a determination of ownership will be made. If the creek belongs to the City of Dallas, you will be advised of the condition of the creek and the approximate schedule for maintenance. If the creek is privately owned, the owner(s) will be contacted and requested to maintain the creek. Street Services will forward your concern to the Public Works and Transportation Department's Flood Management Division for follow up.
Storm Sewer Odor:
Reports of storm sewer odors may be made by calling the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits. Crews will locate the source of the problem. If the storm sewer needs cleaning, it will be referred to the Department of Street Services. If a citizen suspects or if there has been illegal dumping, the storm sewer will be referred to Public Works and Transportation Department's Storm Water Quality Section.
Storm Sewer Stoppage:
The Street Services Department is responsible for storm sewer cleaning. To request storm sewer cleaning, contact the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits. Reports of flooding caused by inadequate drainage will be referred to the Public Works and Transportation Department for investigation.
Street Sweeping:
Currently, the major thoroughfares are swept once per month and the Central Business District streets are swept 2 to 5 nights per week.
Street and Alley Repair:
Street/Alley repair, including pot holes, is the responsibility of Street Services Department. Maintenance and repair requests should be directed to the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits.
Tree Removal:
For trees blocking public alleys, streets, or sidewalks, call the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits. It is the responsibility of the property owner to remove trees that have fallen across or into creeks, drainage ways, channels, and streams on private property. For tree removal in drainage ways owned by the City, call the City Services Dispatch at 311 when dialing from inside the city limits, or (214) 670-5111 when dialing from outside the city limits. Once contacted, a determination of ownership will be made. If the creek belongs to the City, you will be advised of the schedule for tree removal. If the creek is privately owned, the owner(s) will be contacted and asked to remove the tree. Public Works and Transportation, Floodplain Management Division, is responsible for follow-up and code violation monitoring. |
