PARK, PLAYGROUND, RECREATION, AND COMMUNITY FACILITIES

These projects include playgrounds, major park facilities, public facilities, athletic facilities, aquatic facilities, erosion control, site development, historic preservation and service facilities.

PLAYGROUNDS

These improvements will provide for new or replacement playgrounds at 47 sites throughout the City of Dallas. Recent changes in the Consumer Product Safety Commission Guidelines and other regulatory guidelines regarding playgrounds and play equipment have caused the need for an analysis of condition and need for a systematic plan to replace existing facilities. This effort was initiated with funding from the 1995 Bond Program. These improvements may include new equipment, safety surfacing and accessible routes.

MAJOR PARK FACILITIES

These improvements provide for continued restoration of Fair Park, additional improvements at the Dallas Zoo and at White Rock Lake and further development of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

PUBLIC FACILITIES

These improvements include the design and construction of new recreation centers, one addition to a recreation center, and renovation of, or improvements to, existing recreation centers or reservation facilities. The standard recreation center has 6,000 square feet of program space and a full gymnasium, while an addition typically consists of a large multi-purpose room. Reservation facilities are facilities available to the public for rental for special events and functions.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

These projects provide for improvements to various types of athletic facilities in the Park and Recreation Department. The activities involved would include softball, baseball, soccer, football and rugby. The improvements may provide new or replacement light poles, light fixtures, irrigation systems, backstops and bleachers as well as grading and drainage enhancements and the reestablishment of turf.

AQUATIC FACILITIES

These improvements provide for infrastructure improvements for two of the Park and Recreation Department's 23 Community Pools, all of which are at least 20 years of age. These improvements may include new filtration systems, new piping and chlorinating systems, replastering of pool walls, new perimeter fencing, new decking and improvements to the restroom and changing facilities.

EROSION CONTROL (PARKS)

These improvements provide for the stabilization of creek banks, tree protection, slope protection and protection for existing facilities such as trails and walkways, fishing piers and park bridges at risk of damage or loss from flood waters.

SITE DEVELOPMENT

These improvements include parking areas, trails, tennis courts, landscaping, irrigation, multi-use courts, lighting, and picnic facilities and park furniture. These improvements provide for replacement of facilities that have surpassed their useful life span in addition to facilities for new parks.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

These improvements provide for the restoration and stabilization of historically significant park facilities including the stone entry structures and historic landscape features at Lake Cliff Park and the renovation and restoration of Ferris Plaza. The renovation of downtown's Ferris Plaza would include the complete refurbishment of the plaza's historic fountain.

SUPPORT FACILITIES

These improvements provide for the renovation of and for parking improvements at the Athletic and Reservation Office in addition to improvements to other Park and Recreation Department service facilities.
