Requesting Open Records

The Food Protection and Education Division is responsible for assuring the regular inspection of food service establishments in the City of Dallas.

Inspections are based on a starting score of 100 with points.  Point deductions may occur during the inspection for various items found to be in need of correction, thereby reducing the score.  The number of points deducted is related to the potential seriousness of the deficiency.  The Division does not post a letter score.  All food service establishment operators located in the City of Dallas are required to maintain a copy of their most current food inspection report on site and present a copy to patrons upon request.

• A low score does NOT necessarily mean a restaurant was unsafe to eat in on the day of the inspection.
• Anytime a restaurant is found to pose an imminent threat to the public health it is closed during the inspection.  Food establishments that pose such a threat would not be allowed to continue operations until all problems that were identified had been corrected.
• Restaurant scores are a tool to help the health department communicate with owners and managers of food establishments. They are in the business of serving the public and should be as concerned with food safety and sanitation as we are.  We work in a spirit of consultation and partnership so that together we can assure a safe and healthy dining experience.

Restaurant inspections are public record and the detailed inspection records are available for examination by emailing openrecords@dallascityhall.com. Describe in the email the information you want from the City and your request will be processed when the Open Records Project Manager receives your email.
