What does "ozone" mean?
Ozone is formed by the chemical reaction of heat and sunlight on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) at ground level. Intensified reactions are a summertime problem due to high temperatures, minimal wind, sunlight, vehicle exhaust, and other air pollution. The ozone season in Dallas is from May through October. Ozone can cause health problems depending on the length of exposure, frequency of exposure and the level of ozone concentrations. Who can I call about Freon regulations?
Call the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at (214) 665-8548 or the EPA National Hotline at 1-800-296-1996. For Lost Certification cards call 1-800-886-4109 ext 229.

Who do I call regarding emissions testing for automobiles?
Call the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in Austin at (512) 239-1000 or call the regional office at (817) 469-6750. Information about a license to provide emissions testing services is available from the Department of Public Safety at (972) 861-2411.

The City's Environmental Assessment office offers control advice only; it does not provide exterminating or removal services. To obtain a rodent control brochure or to receive advice on controlling rodents, call Environmental Assessment at (214) 948-4429.

How do I file a complaint about noise?
Call the Environmental Assessment office at (214) 948-4429 to report loud noise from a stationary source, including noise from adjacent properties (e.g., air conditioner units, night clubs, or dumpsters being emptied). Aircraft noise complaints should be referred to the Aviation Department by calling (214) 670-6610. Complaints of noise from moving vehicles are handled by the Police Department.

I have a swarm of bees in my yard. What can I do?
Dust the nest with Resmethrin at night when the bees have returned to the nest or contact a beekeeper to have them removed. (Beekeepers are listed in the yellow pages of the telephone book.)

I got sick from eating at a restaurant. Who should I call to report the restaurant?
Contact the Food Protection and Education section at (214) 670-8083 to report an allegation of a food-borne illness.

How do I obtain a permit to open a restaurant?
To apply for a permit to open a restaurant or other food-related permits, visit the Food Protection and Education office at 7901 Goforth Road, Dallas, TX 75238. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. You must bring a valid photo identification, sales tax permit, and a $300 application free plus an additional $200 fee if plans are submitted for review. Call (214) 670-8083 for information. Permit applications may also be made at the Oak Cliff Municipal Center, 320 East Jefferson. Call (214) 948-4480 for information.

Can I cook food at home to sell?
No. All food intended for general public consumption, whether free or for sale, must be prepared at a commercial establishment that is inspected by a federal, state, or local health authority.

Where can I go to take the Registered Food Service Manager class?
These classes are offered at various locations throughout the state. A list of locations may be obtained at the Food Protection and Education office at7901 Goforth Road, Dallas, TX 75238, or by calling (214) 670-8083.

How can I get a permit to sell items by the side of the road or on a parking lot?
Vending on public property is prohibited except in the downtown Central Business District. Questions regarding vending should be directed to the Food Protection and Education office at (214) 670-8083.

Is there a shelter program for battered women?
Yes. There are 4 agencies that offer assistance to battered persons:
Family Place: Serves women and children with 24 hour shelter, counseling and support.

Genesis Women's Shelter: Provides shelter and 3 meals a day for battered women and
children. Also provides counseling and casework services as well as housing assistance.
(214) 942-2998.
New Tomorrow, Inc.: Provides counseling for battered women. (972) 438-3695.
Salvation Army: Provides shelter seven days a week, 24 hours a day for 20- plus women and children. Also provides counseling, support, referrals, case management and financial assistance.

Other City services related to domestic violence: Dallas Police Department Domestic Violence Unit and the Dallas City Attorney's Office Domestic Violence Unit.
